The UK - or to give it its full title,The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - is a land of contrasts. From the sweeping wilds of the Scottish Highlands and Islands to the picturesque Costwold villages, and from ancient cities like York to the bustling metropolis of London, the UK  has something for everyone.

Glastonbury Abbey
For centuries travellers and pilgrims have visited this sacred site, situated in the heart of the beautiful country of Somerset. Steeped in mystery and history, Glastonbury Abbey attracts visitors from across the globe, who come to admire these romantic ruins.

Traditionally the seat of Christianity in England: once visited by Joseph of Arimathea, his staff becoming the Holy Thorn tree that grows here and blossoms twice a year: and legendary burial place of King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere.

Spend time walking through the wonderful grounds where you will find an orchard, an ornamental lily pond, a wildlife duck pond, herb garden, and an ever changing array of trees and wildflowers. Spring, summer and autumn have glorious displays of seasonal colour.

London
Most tourists spend time visiting the most popular sights of London - the Houses of Parliament with its spectacular towers, (including the clock tower usually known as Big Ben, which is actually the name of the bell inside it), Buckingham Palace (parts of which are open to the public during the summer months), the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, Saint Paul's Cathedral, and of course the many world-famous art galleries, museums and theatres.

Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is an official residence of The Queen and the largest occupied castle in the world. A Royal home and fortress for over 900 years, the Castle remains a working palace today.

Visitors can walk around the State Apartments, extensive suites of rooms at the heart of the working palace. For part of the year visitors can also see the Semi State rooms, which are some of the most splendid interiors in the castle. They are furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection including paintings by Holbein, Rubens, Van Dyck and Lawrence, fine tapestries and porcelain, sculpture and armour.
Within the Castle complex there are many additional attractions, including the Drawings Gallery, Queen Mary's dolls' house, and the fourteenth-century Saint George's Chapel, the burial place of ten sovereigns and setting for many Royal weddings.

Queen Mary's Dolls' House
Queen Mary's Dolls' House was a magnificent dollhouse built in the early 1920s, for Queen Mary, the wife of King George V. It has an amazing collection of miniature items that actually work. It was created as a gift to Queen Mary from the people, and to serve as an historical document on how a royal family might live during that period in England. Now it is on display in Windsor Castle as a tourist attraction, especially to people with an interest in miniature houses and furniture.
It is over three feet tall, and contains models of products of well known companies of the time. It is remarkable for its detail and the detail of the objects within it. The carpets, curtains and furnishings were all copies of the real thing, and even the light fittings were working. There is, for example, a flushable toilet, complete right down to the lavatory paper. In addition, well known writers such as Rudyard Kipling wrote special books which were written and bound in scale size and painters provided miniature pictures.
Outside London
Outside of London is the beautiful city of Bath with its Georgian terraces and Roman Baths; Stratford-upon-Avon, famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare but a beautiful town in its own right, with half-timbered buildings and thatched cottages, and the picturesque River Avon winding through it; York  with its spectacular Minster, Roman remains, wonderful Viking museum and narrow streets full of half-timbered buildings all surrounded by mediaeval walls. Outside of the  towns and cities there is some lovely countryside to explore.

The UK abounds in villages and small market towns, all with their own character, and you may be lucky enough to stumble across one or two of the local traditions of the area. The landscape ranges from the rolling hills and lowlands of the south and east to the hills and moors of the north and west, with a number of specially-designated National Parks - the Lake District, the Peak District, the North Yorkshire Moors. There are all areas of natural beauty or ecological importance and as such are maintained and protected to preserve them for all to enjoy.
