Think before you act when cutting down a tree

Most farmers and ranchers at one time or another will find it necessary to cut down a tree. There are many reasons for this-a fruit tree that no longer produces, a diseased tree, or a tree that has grown too large in a poor location, are three examples.

Many people are under the mistaken impression that cutting down a tree is a simple task...just fire up the chain saw and cut away. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There's the right way (and safe way) to do the job, and there's the wrong way, which can lead to serious or fatal injuries.

To successfully take down a tree without incident, it requires two things-good judgment and the right tools. As an example of good judgment, you need to be sure the falling tree doesn't take out some overhead power lines or strike a building or vehicle. As for tools, you will most likely use a chain saw. Be sure it is in proper working order and the chain is sharp.

Wind may have an influence on the direction a tree will fall, as could other nearby trees. A dangerous situation could be created if a felled tree becomes entangled with another tree and doesn't fall completely. Once you determine the direction you want the tree to fall, look around to determine an escape route to use when the tree starts to fall. Don't wait until the tree begins to fall to decide which way you should move.

Begin by making a notch on the trunk at the height you'd like to cut. Think of the tree in thirds. Make the notch one-third of the diameter of the tree and one-third of the width. For example, if the tree is nine inches in diameter, make the notch about three inches high and three inches deep.

When the notch is completed, start cutting on the side opposite the notch, about two inches higher than the floor of the notch. Do not cut all the way through, but leave a thin portion intact to keep the tree from kicking backward and upward when it falls.

Once the tree begins to fall, carefully shut off the chain saw and set it down. Don't throw it. Then leave on your planned escape route and don't return until the downed tree has stopped moving.

If you have any doubts about your ability to do the job, I suggest that you hire a professional. Your peace of mind will be worth the expense.
