Wednesday, October 25, 2006 (Kennedy Space Centre, Florida):

The upcoming Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (http://Solar.Terrestrial.Relations.Observatory.board-online.com/) (STEREO) mission will be the first to provide a 3-D view of the sun and solar wind, according to NASA officials.

The perspective is critical (http://critical.board-online.com/) to improving understanding of space weather and its impact on astronauts and Earth systems (http://Earth.systems.board-online.com/) like communications, satellites and power grids.

NASA on Tuesday said its observations of coronal mass ejections, or CME's, some of the most powerful explosions in the solar system, which can pack the force of one billion megaton nuclear bombs, will be particularly crucial.

It marks the first time that two spacecraft (http://spacecraft.board-online.com/) will launch on the same rocket, and then swing around the Moon to get into separate orbits.

The two nearly identical solar observatories (http://solar-observatories.board-online.com/) are scheduled for launch from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Wednesday.
