Beowulf
1. Why is Beowulf considerate to be the gratest Old English poem?
2. What kind of a hero is Beowulf?
3. Is there anything unusual in the story of Beowulf?
4. What qualities does Beowulf display?
5. What is the atmosphere created by the poet?
6. What are the most importan values for the Danes and the Geats? Make a distinction between the pagan and Christian virtues of BEowulf's character.
7. How can we interpret the figure of the monster - only as a classical figure in Germanic folk tradition or as a Christian symbol as well?
Radix malorum est cupiditas
1. Why does the rogue give away to his fellow-pilgrims the secret hi lives by?
2. What do you think will happen with the three rioters?
3. Do you think they will succceed in finding Death?
4. What is the overwall impression of the tale?
Sonnet A and Sonnet B
1. What is the conflict between Time and Beauty, on the one hand, and Time and Love, on the other, as revealed in the sonnet?
2. Comment on the compression of thought and the density of imagery in the sonnet.
King Lear
1. What does the storm symbolize?
2. What is the role of the contrast between the three characters?
3. Do you thnik it is fair to have both King Lear and his three daughters dead at the end?
4. Are there any positive values that emerge from this play?
5. How are the Christian values of love, forgivness, altruism and patience reached?
