Christmas in Bulgaria
Christmas is a special holiday in Bulgaria. It is a continuation of Christmas Eve, which is on 24th December.
On Christmas Eve all of the family gather around the table, on which are meatless meals like: beans, vain or cabbage sarmi (rice which is in a cabbage or vain leaves), stuffed peppers, pickles, different kinds of nuts, apples, honey and a special kind of bread in which is hidden a coin. The eldest member of the family takes three pieces of bread and sets them - one piece for the Christchild, one for Mary and one for the household. He then breaks up the bread and gives a piece to everyone at the table. The person who finds the coin in his piece is expected to have good fortune in the next year. In some parts of the country, unmarried girls take their first piece of bread from the Christmas Eve meal and place it under their pillows, believing that they will then dream of their intended husband during the night. The walnuts are also important part of the dinner. They are always on the table on this holiday. Everybody takes one and cracks it. If it is good and delicious you have to expect that the next year is going to be good, but if it is nothing in your nut you are going to have a bad year. When the meal is over the table is not cleared until the following morning. Some say it is to insure that there will be plenty of food in the coming year, whilst others leave the food out for departed family members whose spirits may return.
According to the tradition at midnight on Christmas Eve young boys aged 8 to 12 or non-married men form group of about 10-15 boys. The participants are called Koledari. The koledari wear traditional holiday clothes – with beautifully decorated caps. They go round the houses in the village or in the town from midnight till dawn. On their way, in front of the gate and in the house they sing specific ritual songs. The songs differ from one another according to the place they are sung and the person they are dedicated to. As a whole, these songs are ritual wishes for happiness in the family and rich crop in the farm. This ritual is called Koleduvane.
But the way Bulgarians celebrate today is different from this old habit. Nowadays in each home there’s a Christmas tree which is decorated with different balls and colourful lights. Children like this holiday because Santa Clause gives them presents while they are sleeping. In fact Santa Clause does not exist but kid’s parents buy presents to make them happy, and put them under the Christmas tree if they were obedient and good during the year.
Usually on Christmas table there’s a turkey with cabbage. There are also sweets, cakes, and special dessert called baklava or pumpkin pie. Others prefer eating pork, drinking red wine or Rakia (a kind of alcohol drunk in Bulgaria).
Christmas is the last holiday of the year, that’s why people go to their parents, grandparents or other relatives to ask for forgiveness and to wish for the new year more health, happiness and luck.
