Marie Tussaud (1761-1850) was born Marie Grosholtz in Strasbourg,France.Her mother worked as a housekeeper for Dr.Curtius,who was skilled in wax modelling.Curtius taught Tussaud the art of wax modelling and she created her first was figure in 1777.

When Curtius died,he left his collection of waxworks to Marie.In 1802,she went to London.She travelled throughout Great Britain and Ireland showing her collection.Marie Tussaud established her first permanent exhibition on Baker Street in London in 1835.

One of the main attractions of her museum was the Chamber of Horrors.This part of the exhibition included some victims of the French Revolution and figures of murderers and other criminals.

Later on ,wax figures of some other famous people were added to exhibition,including Admiral Nelson and Sir Walter Scott.Some of the sculptures done by Tussaud herself still exist.In 1842,she made a self-portrait which in now on display at the entrance of her museum.

The museum moved to its current location on Marylebone Road in 1884.In 1925,a fire destroyed many of the figures,but the moulds survived,so the historical waxworks could be remade.

Today's wax figures at Tussauds include historical and royal figures,film stars,sports stars and famous murderers.There are no bodyguards or velvet ropes so you can get as close as you want to most of the celebrities.

In January 2007,Kylie Minogue became the first 'scented' figure-fragranced with her new perfume.In July 2007,Daniel Radcliffe became the youngest actor immortalised as a waxwork at Madame Tussauds.
