If happiness was a commodity and we assume that each living person gives and takes from the overall pool of world happiness, then we can make it very simple:

If you give more than you take - keep living, you're doing fine.
If you take more than you give - the high building's over there, go jump.

Sounds paradoxical? People argue that a being's ultimate goal is to maximize happiness. However, happiness is mainly achieved through interaction with other people. Therefore, if you take more from the pool than you give and the majority of people are like you, the pool will be depleted before everyone can take his share. Logically, they will be unhappy, because they were initially supposed to take an amount X, but couldn't. So they will either live unhappy or commit suicide.

Lets review the other scenario now - if people give more than they take. Then the pool will have something left to cover the imbalance which may result from new individuals entering the pool. Everyone will be happy, because they will be taking as much as they need. Some will even be happier, because they may take some of the "excess happiness".

More can be said on the hypothesis above, but I deem you smart enough to figure it out on your own wink.gif.

So if you don't want more mass murderers in schools, think well next time you "take" someone's happiness. He might be in the news on the morrow.
