RALF: Tonight we’d like you to meet a beautiful lady whose life could’ve served as a model for a play by Eugene O’Neill or a novel by Theodore Dreiser. The talented star from Broadway and Hollywood – Ms Frances Farmer. Hellow Frances.

FRANCES: Hellow …

RALF: Now we know that there are certain periods in your life that have left unhappy scars on your memory. What then prompted you to come and relate your life here with us Frances?

FRANCES: Well, Ralf, I wanted to be able to tell something of my own experiences … to help people who have, I know, been in the same kind of predicament… I’ve received so many letters from people who want… a-a-a…hope, advice… even which perhaps I might be able to suggest where they can find it.

RALF: Other stories accuse you of being an alcoholic. Were you Frances?

FRANCES: No, never… an alcoholic.

RALF: Did you ever take dope?

FRANCES: No, … Never.

(Throughout this, Frances' jaw works slowly back and forth, not from anger, but in embarrassment and doubt.)

RALF: Can you tell us what happened next, Frances?

FRANCES: Well, Ralf, a-a-a… I didn’t think then, and I still don’t, that I was actually sick. But there are so many people who still think that I was mentally ill that I just had to find out why. You know, if you are treated like a patient long enough, you're apt to act like one... Because after all any effective cure is based on faith in oneself… which means faith in God.
