Wow...unlike the Kennen Sie Deutsch(Do you speak German) topic, this one actually made it through the weeks...glad to see that :D .
Btw I'm feeling kinda stupid now.I just spent an hour studying in biology coz we're having a test next class. Then I announced on skype I was almost done studying (in biology).Everyone were like "Man wtf, next biology period isn't until Wednesday lol " then I checked my programme of studies and...no biology tomorrow :D

Hi guys.
I studied English for six years.
But now we don't have English classes in my school, so i'm learning it at home. For example, i'm trying to watch movies without the subtitles. :D
Please fix my mistakes in these few sentences... Thank you! :)

Poor Luscious_Heart!What a hectic day you had!Do you live in Varna for if you do your school should have been closed down.
When I managed to get to our classroom there were only 8 of my classmates out of 29.And our first class was Maths as well.I was sure our Maths teacher would come for she's not the kind of person that would miss the opportunity to come and spoil your day!Unfortunately,I was right and I had to spend the worst 40 minutes of extreme boredom counting down the seconds until it was over...Then we had Chemistry but our teacher didn't succeed to examine us because just as she was opening up the register someone came in and announced we could go home  You should have seen her face that turned from pale into red within seconds:razz:

01-19-2010, 19:21
JCoutureJunkie, I am sorry for your having to bear 40 minutes of Maths.
At least they let you go home. 8-)

Ohmigosh, you wouldn't want to know what happened last SATURDAY. Horrible it was... Compared to it, today's disasters were a piece of cake to deal with.
Before last Saturday, I had enjoyed a few pleasant days. I worked out a new hairstyle, I got new high-heel boots (which I have not yet worn), some new accessories as well, etc.
Each Saturday I have a German learning course.
This course thingy is sort of confusing, for we are kept for almost 3 hours there. First part is 1 hour 40 minutes, then we take a 20 minutes' break.
At first, I walked my 2 friends to the local supermarket but then decided not to eat anything at all. I just told them I'd have a little walk around.
I saw a puddle 30 m away from the building where these language courses are conducted. It was more than 1 m wide, and I was wearing flat boots.
"I am a Spartan. I will jump over it."
JUMP! Whoopee, I did it. Now jump again. Radicool, I did great again. Third strike...
No, I did not fell into the puddle (I wish I had). My third jump was successful again, but it wasn't until I jumped that I decided to run back into the building. I had only run 2 m to the east of the puddle when I landed ungracefully on the ground.
Ouch. That was my right knee (my palms prevented me from hurting my left one).
THESE WERE MY FAVOURITE GRAY JEANS!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Look at that horrible tear staring from my right leg!
It has a shape of a laughing face, really.
Then I realised I had not only torn my jeans but my gloves as well. And most of all - my beloved purple leggings.
I was so proud of them! The previous day I was doing a sidesplit with them on when I just exclaimed, "Ohmigosh, these leggings suit my legs perfectly."

F*ck it all! :-x There's nothing worse than tearing your jeans! :booooomb:

P.S.: May I make a little amendment, please? We should never say succeed to do sth, but succeed in doing sth. :)

Hey, guys! How are you doin'? :)
I guess now I have to introduce myself... My name is Eva. I've been studying English for 3 or 4 years (Sorry, I'm not really sure). As long as I don't have enough practice I don't think I can write and speak fluently.. Well, maybe I'm right .. maybe not. The good ones will tell. :) Please correct me where needed. [/b]

Hi all. I have studied English for more than ten years. Although, i don't think i'm good at it. :) This is a good idea for practise, so i think i'll write a lot.
On the subject, i don't know how many push-ups i can do, but my record is a hundred for series, how many series, i can't remember. Now i lost shape, but i'm taking measures if i can say that way. Good luck with the trainings!

Luscious_Heart
01-21-2010, 17:39
I am taking up athletics first thing in February, for our town team is currently practising for upcoming competitions, and I cannot sign up for it.
Today I could not do any situps... I felt extreme pressure in the front part of the neck.

Nevertheless, I have not bitten a nail in more than 20 days. Whoopee!
However, I still clean them with my teeth, which I cannot stop doing, even though saliva makes them more fragile.
I do put iodine tincture on them every evening, I heard it strengthens them.
In a month or two I'll probably have had them manicured by a professional. 8-)

How was your day fellows?

Fridaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy I have been dreaming for this day for a fortnight now. Relax, but not for too long. I have a whole bunch of work to do and Wednesday I will be traveling the entire day. And I have German tomorrow and I will skip 4 school days which is fuck insofar as I will have to catch up a whole lot of work after that. But at least I will be able to write here today.

How is everyone? I miss you, but I am working my ass off right now and I am so busy that I have hardly any time left for relaxing. Anyway...what is going on in here? :)

I guess I have to introduce myself first! :) My name is Mery and I am fifteen. I have been studying English for 9 years and I am really fond of the language. Unfortunately, I have never been to England. I hope this summer I will have a chance to walk around London's streets, though! :D

I am so busy that I will have to turn down the invitation.  :D

What the hell did I just do...

Anyway. Would rather is more like prefer, whereas had better is much more similar to should.
Let's look at the following sentences:
I would rather throw a party than go to school. This means that I prefer to throw a party, not that I ought to...
But if the doctor says: You had better stay at home until you fully recover. This means that you should. It is not a matter of the doctor's preference - it is a recommendation.

You can also use had better to warn somebody of something:
E.g. You had better watch the way you talk to me! This is a warning. If you say that you will most probably be angry and you will be telling someone not to talk to you any more like this.

Tell me what particularly confuses you since the two constructions are quite different in meaning. Is it the way they form sentences? :-o

Replay?
I spent my day crossing the city streets in 9 cm heels.
With all that snow and ice... ugh. My day began with my falling down on the right side of my athletic butt.
Ouch.
I have German tomorrow as well.
Hey JCouture, what do you do to improve your English? While browsing the thread, I found out you are my age. I myself watch TV series in English (sometimes with English subtitles on, in order to do something like a "hear-and-then-read-dictation"), I also sometimes grab Daphne du Maurier's story medley, and, no matter how ridiculous it sounds, I would watch Cartoon Network until the 7th grade. But now, as we can see, it's all in Bulgarian which turns my ex-favourite channel into a bundle of crap.
How are young kids supposed to advance in English if they don't have CN in English? 8-)

amk933, I have been determined to ask you this for a fortnight or longer, but what the hell is the correct way to say "advance" -> advance IN sth, or WITH sth?

Well I hardly know anything about Uggs in general, why not get some from the Internet?
And yes, English is very rich in vocabulary... It is emphasised on in the Advanced in English exam. The grammar ain't that hard, but there is a great deal of idioms, synonyms, derivatives, etc. But reading is very helpful tho..

I do not live there all the time. I just go often and when I am in Bulgaria I go to the embassy school where all teachers are American and so are most of the students. Plus I don't have to study Bulgarian and neither will I get a Bulgarian diploma. I will be entirely transferring to the US in 2012 and most probably it will be in the Massachusetts/New Heaven area or at least I think so... :)

Your problem is that you can't write a letter long enough ?How many words it has to be ? My English is terrible (like my French) but i don't have a problem with the lenght. Last time when i was writing a letter i discovered that i overleaped the limite (120-180). My lenght was above 300 words. I found myself removing whole paragraphs. I guess that i'll have to pay attention next time ; ) !

Innane - dull, silly, in my case - boring.

Yes, I go to the school he said which is the one serving the embassy. It is the typical American high school and is exactly what you are going to see in the States. I have not studied Bulgarian at all for a long time now. Our system claims to be a mixture between the American and the Britsh one, but, if you know both, it won't take you much time to realize that it is the American one. Furthermore, in most of our classes we use GNAmE (General North American English) and all of my teachers are American/Canadian.

Homeworks are not bad...well actually depends on the class. Generally - not hard, but I am of the opinion that the school as a whole is times more difficult than the elite Bulgarian ones.

As a matter of fact (not in...)

English may actually come from Great Britain, but the original British accent is much more like the American one nowadays...If you could hear Shakespeare talking, you would think he is American. So the RP pronounciation is far away from the original BBC English of Shakespearean times when people in the UK spoke with an accent closer to the current GNAmE one.

And the British English sounds just obnoxious...

Personally, I find the topic quite enjoyable and helpful. I have been studying English for about 3 years, the elementary school teaching doesn't count for me, because basically all we did was sing the alphabet and learn to pronounce simple phrases. I have English classes every day at school but it's not enough at all for us to pass important exams a year or so later. The thing I don't like about our classes is that we don't practice our speaking skills enough or when we do, we only talk about ourselves instead of what I prefer - giving our opinions and judgments, maybe even argue about certain topics, which are the young people interested in.
Anyway, it was quite a nice day, except the part when I kept blushing like hell for hours, as my six-month secret was almost finally revealed couple times.

Please, please, help me.. Can you translate this text in English? I always make mistakes in past tenses.. ](*,) ](*,)

oh... my town is a "twin town" with Waren.. we have some special relations and that's why every year a group of 6-10 students go there for 10 days to help the town... for example last year the group built wooden fences around a small park, a wooden bridge over a small river... every day after work we'll go see something in the town, we will have a walk and so on... the good news is that we'll sleep 2 times before we go there - in Budapest and in Vienna.

Please, please, help me.. Can you translate this text in English? I always make mistakes in past tenses.. ](*,) ](*,)

Hey there, party people.

I'm new here (I'm Bulgarian, just so we're clear) and I thought that my first post should include some of my favourite things in life.

So what is there to say? I'm 14 years old, just joined this forum (even though I was aware of its existence before that) and decided to step out of my lurking place. Well, I'm generally a cheerful kid, not too shy to express my views on nearly every subject there is, English is one of my hobbies (I wouldn't want to call it a "skill", because acting all cocky in my first post surely won't do me any good). I have studied it since kindergarden and I still do (I'm in the 8th grade, if you haven't figured it out already). But, you know, I can't really say that school is what helped me understand English better. No, it's not that at all, it was CARTOONS.

Yes, cartoons. I love cartoons. I like 'em all, but my favorites are 90's cartoons. Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, 2 Stupid Dogs, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi etc. A few years ago I got into anime, which lead to manga etc. I love reading manga. But I'm not (an) otaku (though I guess even knowing the term is frightening on its own, wouldn't you agree?). So I guess you could say that I am very fond of everything that is toony (even in the slightest). I hate those live-action type of series that were recently introduced, mainly because the actors act too unnatural and they kill the whole idea of a joke. Not funny, not entertaining, pure garbage. But that's something I'll discuss some other time.

Other hobbies? Yeah, I love basketball. Such an addictive sport. I play it like every day and I never get tired of it!

What else? Video games! Need I explain why? Table tennis, jogging, writing long posts in English on Bulgarian forums just to piss people off, beer-drinking, eating (unbelievable, I know), street fighting (only whenever necessary), pointing out people's mistakes in a very agonizing manner etc.

Well, let's not get carried away. 8-)

See you around, chum(p)s.

Oh yeah, mind rating my English? :-D

I do not think that a thread where every second opinion is "what's up", written with 7 spelling mistakes is very useful. Furthermore, the aim of that whole communication is that people ameliorate their language skills. That is just not going to happen with repetitive, innane and austere comments, such as the one mentioned above. I myself can help you not just with vocab, spelling, etc., but with punctuation and collocations as well. :)

Quite the contrary - it is a very formal word and guess what - it is one of the most frequently used SAT words. Here is the definition (click) (http://www.google.bg/#hl=bg&q=definition%3A+innane&meta=&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp=7616fe1d623d3e83)

I do not know why your teachers did not know it, but my teachers do... How did you say it? Do not confuse the word with innate...

By the way... when you have a negative sentence do not use "too"...use either. Or, if you formulate the sentence in another way, use nor/neither, but never use too, as well, also, etc... :)

^ Well to be honest, I remember that the structure was like "rather a", "a pretty", "quite a", "a fairly". Correct me if I'm mistaking. I don't seem to remember the page number in my Coursebook.

I would say it like that:

It is quite an interesting book.
It is a rather interesting book.
It is a fairly interesting book.
It is a pretty interesting book.

Quite could go the other way as well, but sounds, so to say, awkward.

:)

Anyway, try to avoid these modifiers because they are not the best ones to use...When you talk they are okay, when you write and every adjective is preceeded by such a word, it just sounds shallow.

gost89, thank you for showing me my mistakes. I am sorry about them, but I am not so good in english yet. I am only 7th grade, but I am trying to speak english correctly. Don't judge me, everybody think that I am very good about my age and my experience with the language. There is too much time and I hope I will learn everything about the english language, I was just wanted to try to communicate with you and see my mistakes. :)

Quote from my Coursebook:
It's a very/extremely popular attraction.
It's rather a/a rather/a fairly/a pretty small town.
It's quite an interesting palace.

And NEVER use pretty a, fairly a.
And also, "a quite interesting castle" is struckthrough with a red line.
Maybe it's used in colloquial English.

This is the first time in my life that I see rather before the article...I am going to ask tomorrow, but I have never heard anyone say it like that, nor would I do so...

Is it a Bulgarian textbook? :-o
Edit: For quite is okay to be struck through. No one will say a quite or rather a... 8-) I am pretty surprised to see rather...I will write a note to ask. And I will check now because I have a whole section of the library called Oxford with bazillions of dictionaries, grammars and editions...

I am not judging you. You said, if somebody saw your mistakes to correct them, and I made that. How long have you been studying English ?

I saw it, but the thing is that aside from some nosy Brits no one else would say rather a...or at least I have never heard it. However, it might be that that there are only Americans around me at school and I am used to the American way...or, if not only Americans, then the rest are also used to the American English...

One more advice from me :) It's good to answer in the tense in which you have been asked. In this case "I have been studying English for 4 years"

^Answering in the tense of the question is not always correct.

If I ask you: Have you ever been in England?
Would you say: I have been there last year or I went there last year? ;)

It is a common mistake. :)

I'm going to England this summer, and this Autumn I'm going to Canada..
You're lucky! :) Do you have any relatives there?
In my school there was a school trip to England but there weren't enough people who want to go there. :(
Well I know two girl from London, but I'm actually going with few students and teachers. In Spain students have this opportunity to visit different countries and make friends.

Yes, like always you are right :) For that I wrote "good", there where you can answer in the same tense, do it, but when it's not correct, don' do it :) I want to ask you something, where do I have to put commas in English, we haven't studied that, my teachers say that it's not so important.
