[quote]Hello, and thanks for writing:

It's likely some people on the list have books to offer. I mention one at the very end. But if you google "ugarit+el" you'll find what you are looking for. In the Bible itself, it mentions Nehushtan (which has mysterious roots and is not as well recorded as the Ugarit "borrowed" gods the Hebrews used), Astarte (who has many different spellings of her name, and was the consort of the main god), Sophia (the goddess of Wisdom personified who actually has a speaking part in the book of Solomon).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugaritic_pantheon#Pantheon (See El and Yahweh, Athtart on this list)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehushtan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astarte
While the first Biblical reference mentions Astarte in opposition to El/Yahweh, other references, esp. in Kings, talk about her worship in conjunction with El/Yahweh--which would have been predictable considering she is his wife in the pre-existing Semitic pantheons.

And of course Ba'al--a relation of El in Ugarit, but also a generic name for "god," is often at odds with El/Yahweh in the Old Testament:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baal

Like "Ba'al," "El" can also be a proper name of god or a generic name of god. The writers of the Old Testament are divided into two camps: J and E. This is because some use the label Yahweh (sometimes also translated Jehovah) and others use El--as the name of god. The generic term for god, el, is also used in the OT.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahweh
Above, read the sections on "Linguistic roots and meaning" and "Development of Yahweh worship."

I think Molech is also referenced in the OT. Gods were often viewed as having regional/local authority. Today we have an idea of god being "real" or not real. But in the Bronze Age, in the Mid East, the idea was that you paid homage to whatever gods covered the region you moved to or that you were passing through. The Hebrews, having nomadic roots, seem to have adopted Yahweh/El as a patron god who actually _moved_ with them anywhere they traveled. This was a departure from the norm, but makes sense for a nomadic tribe. For more on this, Karen Armstrong's "History of God" has some content on it in her section on Judaism's development.

I hope any of this helps. If you have specific interest, you can check references at these sites for more in-depth books or articles.

Thanks for contacting the list.

Hello,

Recently I was told that Judeism had polytheistic roots, that is, there was an entire bunch
